Some affordable digital cameras can be bought for around $200, and when you reach the $600 price point you’re entering into the high end range. And at the end of it all, there’s the Hasselblad H4D 200MS. You can probably afford it if you’re a mega millionaire but ordinary citizens are probably going to shake their heads in disbelief when they see its price tag. You see, it costs a staggering $45,000!
That’s not a misprint, mind you. That’s forty-five thousand dollars. Seriously. And no, it’s not made of solid gold and studded with diamonds. But if you already have the Hasselblad H4D 50MS, you can send that camera to Hasselblad for an upgrade to the 200MS for just 7,000 euros, which is about $7,682 based on today’s exchange rates. If it’s any consolation, you can buy it for almost $10,000 less if you live in Europe.
The Hasselblad H4D 200MS dwarfs the megapixel features you see on other types of digicams. The 200 in its name refers to the megapixels it offers. Yes, you get 200 megapixels, which is probably much more than what you would need if you’re a regular guy.
It uses a 36.7×49.1mm sensor with only 50 MP, and what it does is to take shots with 6132 x 8176 pixels. It takes 6 separate shots, and these shots are combined to create a single image that can fill up 600 MB in file storage. The Hasselblad H4D 200MS can also take pictures at ISO sensitivity settings between 50 and 800.
It also offers True Focus, which solves the problem of focusing on a subject at one point and then adjust the camera to recompose the shot. The Hasselblad H4D 200MS can measure the change in the camera’s position and automatically adjust the autofocus setting in real time.
Pros and Cons
The good news here is that you can get superb shots at a level which no other camera can provide. If you want the very best image you can get, then this is the camera for you. High quality in images means a great need for storage for the huge file sizes, but at least you can attach a hard disk and CompactFlash Cards.
On the other hand, there’s that price which is pretty much the elephant in the room that no one can ignore. What’s more, it doesn’t let you take images of moving subjects, so sports photography is out of the question.
There are two kinds of people who may want to get the Hasselblad H4D 200MS. One is someone who has too much money in their bank accounts than they know what to do with.
The other kind of people who will want to buy the Hasselblad H4D 200MS are the creative people in the photography business/profession who require extremely detailed photos. For example, this camera is great when you need to take a picture of a Van Gogh for reproduction.
Also, this kind of photography may be required for many ads that showcase high end luxury items. That means you can use the Hasselblad H4D 200MS if you’re going to feature jewelry, luxury watches, and exotic cars.
So all in all, for some people, the Hasselblad H4D 200MS actually makes sense. But for most of us, it’s just way too expensive!
